Ways to be more productive after work hours

Making time for your hobbies, pet projects, or even going to the gym can be challenging after a long, tiring day at work. Finding ways to squeeze those activities in, is very important because they can feed the soul and keep you feeling productive and fulfilled.

The first thing many people want to do when they get home after work is to relax on the couch – shoes off, feet up – turn on the television and simply switch off. If one gives in to that urge, however, then productivity comes to a halt altogether and a monotonous routine settles in. That time could be utilized so much better to pursue one’s hobbies and interests, or even to try and learn something new. So how can you get the most out of your time outside working hours?

Ways to be more productive after work hours

Sticking to a schedule

Firstly, find an activity that you enjoy or want to try. Then make a schedule of when you can do it and try to stick to it. If you enjoy the gym, then try going straight from work so you won’t be tempted to just stay home. It might be difficult at first to get into it, but after a few times, you will find that by exercising you’ll feel more energized, and it will, in fact, help you get through your workday. If that doesn’t work for you then try going home first, pack your gym gear, and head out after a brief 10-minute rest. Either way, exercise can be good for your overall well-being. Once it becomes part of a routine, you will find that if you skip the gym you will not feel as energized as you would if you had gone. If you prefer being outdoors, then as soon as you get home, change into your sports gear and head out for a walk or a jog if you’re feeling more energetic. You can even take the dog out if you have one, and as the saying goes, ‘Get two birds with one stone.’ We’re sure he or she will love it too.

Making lists

Have a DIY project that you’ve been wanting to get your hands on? Once you’ve made a list of what you’ll need, take a trip to the hardware store and that will get you closer to finally getting started. The key is to be intentional about your actions and going through with what you’ve set your mind to do. You can put aside an allotted time when you get home from work to dedicate to your project, even if it’s just 15 minutes. If it takes you longer than you’d expected to complete it, the fact that you’ve started is in itself a step forward.

Joining a club

If you’re more of a bookworm or have more cultural interests, then joining a book club, learning a new language, trying out a cooking class or possible a dance class may be more appealing to you. You can do some research to source that book you fancy, or enquire about which days the classes take place and you’re set to go.

The key here is picking projects or activities that you’re passionate about. Somehow, when doing something you love, you’re more likely to make the time and find the energy to do it. Not only will it leave you feeling more productive, but more fulfilled as well. Anything is possible if you make the time.
