Reaching big goals for the first time often does not work

There are many reasons why people fail to reach the goals that they set for themselves, but oftentimes the biggest ‘mistake’ they tend to make is taking on too much, too quickly. Aiming for any big goal and working tediously towards it can be overwhelming and daunting, and this can make you feel too overwhelmed to keep going. Dividing a big goal into smaller bite-sized goals makes it easier to deal with over the long run and will increase your chances of achieving your ultimate goal. It also constantly keeps you motivated and gives you a sense of satisfaction while working towards your big goal.

Planning

The more you plan and decide what you need to get done on a smaller scale, in order to achieve your overall goal, the better your chances of achieving your goal. For example, if you want to be able to run 3 miles by the end of the year, you perhaps need to start running 0.5 miles for the first month and then increase it to 1 mile. This provides you with a clear image of where you are going, both with small goals and the overall big goal.

Be realistic

You cannot expect to achieve a big goal that needs a lot of work in a few weeks or months. If you put too much pressure on yourself to achieve it in an unrealistic period of time, it is going to leave you feeling frustrated. and there is also the possibility that you might not make it in time. If you want to run 3 miles but only give yourself 3 days to achieve this, then the chances are high that success will not be met and disappointment will be the result. This being said, even if you are realistic, you must also be open to some failure on your journey. Things sometimes go wrong and setbacks are met, but keep your goals realistic and adjust it accordingly if need be so that you can get the most out of this experience.

Be determined

It is not always going to be easy to work towards your goal. Sometimes you might feel tired or lack motivation but just keep pushing towards that final big goal because it will definitely be worth it in the end. The small goals almost have to become a habit to you over time. For example, running for 1 mile 3 times a week should just become something natural to you, then it will be much easier to keep to this small goal and achieve it.

Daily goals

Daily goal-setting is one of the best strategies because they ensure that you refocus yourself every day. It is easy to lose sight of a big goal in the scheme of things so refocusing and doing a little bit to work towards your goal each day is definitely the best way to go. It does not have to be the same activity every day. Example, running 3 times a week and making sure to stretch every day could potentially provide you with a daily goal that is working towards the big goal, even though it is a slightly different activity in nature.
